The Synthesis and Analysis of a Zeolite Brittney Brown Partner: Victoria Marshall April 27, 2009 Introduction The purpose of the two-part lab was to synthesis a compound known as zeolite and test its ability as a water softener. Zeolites are members of naturally occurring hydrated aluminosilicate minerals that have a framework structure that encloses interconnected cavities occupied by large positively charged ions (zeoponix). The properties of zeolite are exploited in water softeners in relation to the ease of movement of ions and water within the framework that allows reversible dehydration and cation exchange (zeoponix). Detergents are common household products. Many different laundry detergents use zeolites because of their ability as a water-softening agent. Zeolites are the preferred choice to phosphates which contribute to the deterioration of water quality (Huck). Zeolites in detergents are builders, lifting dirt and keeping it from getting back on the clothing throughout the duration of the wash cycle (Huck). For the first exercise in the lab compound Zeolite A was made in the experiment. Next, the compound was analyzed by measuring its sudsiness and performing a complexometric titration with EDTA.
