September 14, 2010 Problem Behavior What is functional assessment? The process of gathering information about the antecedents and consequences that are functionally related to the occurrence of behavior. Carr (1977) suggested operant contingencies that might maintain SIB o Social positive reinforcement o Social negative reinforcement o Sensory reinforcement Iwata and colleagues adapted functional analysis methods to assess maintaining variables. Function-Analytic Logic Behavior disorders are not best evaluated on the basis o topography (what they look like) o Same behavior may have different functional properties for different people. 2 boys may come in banging their heads. One may do it to get attention from the caregivers; the other may do it to avoid medical treatment from caregivers. o Different behaviors may have similar functional properties One boy bangs his head, another bites himself. The behaviors are different but they might both occur in order to get attention from
