Anderson 1 Paige Anderson Professor Patterson English Composition 101.093 14 December, 2010 Widespread Outbreak of Obesity The United States population is slowly decreasing neither because of HIV, nor other diseases that are fatal but to something that everyone can prevent, Obesity. Obesity is a term used to describe body weight that is much greater than what is considered healthy. Obesity is becoming an epidemic within the U.S because of reasons that are explanatory, For instance, the prices of food and the lack of exercise this causes many American to make the choices of being an unhealthy individual. “Finding of the latest Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which shows that 63.1% of adults in the U.S. were either overweight or obese in 2009.That, was a small but measurable increase from 62.2% the previous year? The survey finds that 36.6% of Americans are overweight and 26.5% obese” (Hendrick). A Tremendous amount of Americans are unhealthy which is increasing the rate of obesity causing it to become an unnecessary Epidemic. Due to the prices of healthy food and the income of many Americans, many of them choose to buy cheap food that is unhealthy for the body. "The states that are becoming obese are the states that are low income," says Adam Drenowski, PhD, director of the Center for Public Health Nutrition at the University of Washington in Seattle. States that rank among the lowest in household incomes -- Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and West Virginia -- are those with the highest percentages of obesity. Conversely, Connecticut and Massachusetts, which are among the wealthiest states, have among the lowest obesity rates” (Osterweil).
