Curtis Missal Writing 2010 S.L. Walter 09/20/06 Rhetorical Analysis Subjective Necessity For Social Settlements In “Subjective Necessity For Social Settlements”, Jane Addams attempts to analyze the motives of young people through emotion. She uses a declaration from Huxley, stating “that the sense of uselessness is the severest shock which the human system can sustain, and that if persistently sustained, it results in atrophy of function, (120)”. Then she goes on talking about all of the advantages that young people have now a days such as the right to a higher education, to travel, and economic study. She is basically stating that these young people would much rather sustain this so called “shock of inaction” rather than take advantage of these opportunities. I believe her main point of this writing is to try to get the younger generation motivated to help those in need. Her way of motivation for this group of young adults is to try to make them feel useless by saying that they don’t care enough. She basically states throughout the writing that
