Quenton Porter 10/18/2018 Wrt.101 Theownership of guns has always been a controversial topic in the United States. The Second Amendment has been used in defense of owning guns, but, it is an unclear amendment and was written in a different time under different circumstances. Molly Ivins dives into this subject matter in her argumentative essay called, “Get a Knife, Get a Dog, But Get Rid of Guns”. While her essay is an argumentative essay at its core it also includes plenty of comical elements. Ivins uses this comedy and satire to make those she is opposing in her argument seem absolutely absurd. It also helps draw attentionand identify with the audience she is writing to which is the average American citizen. She also shows she isnot completely opposed to the front she is arguing towards.She argues the point that she herself is not anti-gun but prefers other methods of protection. Her saying guns while effective come with many disadvantages compared to other forms of self-defense. She then goes to reinforce her argumenteven more with what so many pro guns users use to support their own claims The Second Amendment. Irvin explains how the Second Amendment is misused in its approach to gun use. Then explains that she wouldn’t want to just cease the use of guns entirely just become more regulated than they are currently. Ivins begins the essay stating her stance in the argument declaring that, “I’m not antigun. I’m pro-knife. Consider the merits of a knife.” she then goes into detail explaining this point of view. Announcing all of the positives of people’s use of knives in a comedic sense. For example
