Unformatted text preview: Air Pollution and Global Warming USC Geol 108 (Anderson) Air Pollution and Global Warming NY Smog LA City Hall, 1953 and Today Air Pollution - 3rd World From Al Gores Earth In Balance, Chapter 3Buddhas Breath Poland- children regularly taken underground into deep mines Romania- at its "black town" of Copsa Mica, trees and grass appear soaked in ink because they are so stained with soot; horses stay for only two years N. Czechoslovakia- the government pays a bonus for anyone who will stay for 2 years, called "burial money Ukraine - puts out 8x as many particulates as does entire U.S. Mexico City- worst air pollution in the world!! View of Mexico City Two Types of Air Pollution 1. Combustion - pollutants as a direct discharge of industry and cars. CO2, SO2, soot (C ), NOx, CO, F, Cl, acid rain Example: burning of fossil fuels: CH4 (methane) +2O2 = CO2 + 2H2O 2. Photochemical - sunlight needed Example: Ozone - NO2+UV = NO + O O +O2 + O3 (ozone) Sao Paulo, Brazil Air Pollution from Combustion CO2, CO (more toxic) - mostly from fossil fuels SO2 - from sulfur-bearing coal NOx (NO-NO2) - from combustion in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere Soot - carbon particulates (also includes toxic metals) Cl, F - from industry Acid Rain - H2O + CO2, CO = carbonic acid- H2O + SO2 = sulfuric acid- H2O + NOx = nitric acid- H2O + Cl = hydrochloric acid- H2O + F = hydrofluoric acid Extent of Air Pollution Local - such as that within the LA basin Regional - Pittsburgh's smoke to Labrador's acid rain Global - CO 2 and upper atmosphere ozone depletion An ongoing debate in Congress is whether the EPA should be empowered to regulate CO2 emissions. In the 1970 Clean Air Act, CO2 was not listed as a pollutant. At the time, global warming was an unknown entity. How Earths Air has Changed Early air of Earth - volcanic, > 90% CO 2 and dense - CO 2 now as limestone and marble as calcite (CaCO 3 ) - leaving N and, from photosynthesis, O Air today 78 % N 21 % O 2 0.9 % Ar 99.9 % <0.1 %: H O + 380 ppm CO + 1.6 ppm CH 1)...
