The restrictions were found on WebCT, which included maximum stresses, and factors of safety to be taken into consideration. The group was evaluated based on how efficient their beam was in terms of minimizing the amount of wood used while still meeting the necessary conditions. This section will entail information about the entire design and fabrication process for the chosen design of the gantry hoist and truss. The group made five separate design considerations for the beam and after considering each design; a simple yet effective design was selected. In order to determine the worth of each beam, the group created an Excel sheet that mathematically determined which beam would be best. The calculated stress had to be less than 1233 psi while the maximum horizontal shear was required to be less than 50 psi and the total wood used had to be less than 9 in to meet the requirements of...
