The purpose of this experiment was to practice using Microsoft Excel, and use data from a materials tensile test. The data was manipulated in order to find the stress, strain, and other information from a particular piece of Aluminum. Procedure: The provided Microsoft Excel sheet titled: “Tensile Test Homework Spreadsheet” gave all the data points needed for this experiment. From the spreadsheet: 1. Calculate engineering strain by using the formula: extension/ initial length 2. Calculate engineering stress by using the formula: load/area. The area can be found by: sample width*sample thickness 3. Make a scatter plot using the stress vs. strain data 4. Find the ultimate tensile stress by find where the largest stress value is located 5. Calculate the percent elongation to failure by using the formula: total extension/initial length *100%
