AP Biology 2010-2011 Peddie School Kevin Brown kbrown@peddie.org About the text… 1) Campbell and Reece, 8 th edition, Menlo Park, CA: Benjamin/Cummings 2) If you have the 7 th edition, still log onto the website for the 8 th edition, and figure out which chapters to read! 3) Your summer reading on evolution Course policies and teaching methods… This course is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biology. The syllabus has been constructed under the guidelines of the College Board. The text will be covered using lectures, labs, discussions, demonstrations, and presentations. Students are encouraged, and sometimes required, to submit all formal assignments in type- written form. Instructions will sometimes be disseminated via email. The AP Biology course is the equivalent of the freshman level General Biology course offered at colleges and universities. All Peddie students who take AP Biology are required to take the national AP Biology exam administered by the College Board. Many universities will grant biology credit to those students whose exam scores indicate sufficient preparation. Therefore, the demands of the course are far greater than those of typical high school classes. AP Biology has, among others, the following unique requirements: You will have required homework assignments over school breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Breaks). Due to the pace of the course, it will be necessary to meet outside of regularly scheduled class time(DMX periods) from time to time. These occasions will be used to complete activities, including AP exam review. They will be announced well in advance, and I will work with you to see that conflicts with other school activities are kept to a minimum. Goals of this course… 1) Help students develop a conceptual framework for modern biology, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing science of biology. 2) Provide the equivalent of a college introductory biology course. 3) Provide each student with the background and skills necessary for a score of 3 or better on the AP Exam. 4) Help develop learning styles and skills that will continue into college. 5)
