Week 13 Synopsis Chapter 14 deals with ethical leadership and diversity. Influence is power and leaders need to be careful to use their influence in an ethical manner. Powerful leaders can use their positions for personal or economic gain. Obviously, this must be avoided but can be difficult. One only needs to look at the recent Enron case to see the potential for harm when there are ethical lapses. It is a CEOs job to promote an ethical climate. The text points out this can be done by: Setting an example of ethical behavior in your own actions Facilitate the development and dissemination of a code of ethical conduct Initiate discussions with followers or colleagues about ethics and integrity Recognize and reward ethical behavior by others Take personal risks to advocate moral solutions to problems Help others find fair and ethical solutions to conflicts Initiate support services (e.g. ethics hotline, online advisory group etc.) It is not only leaders and managers than can promote an ethical climate. All members of an organization have an obligation to oppose unethical practices. They can refuse to share in benefits provided by these activities and refuse to accept assignments that involve these activities. These are reactive. However, an employee can also be proactive by speaking out publicly against unfair or unethical practices and discouraging the unethical actions by others. This is not always easy. Most employees will not engage in these activities themselves but it takes a lot of mettle to speak out against the actions and take on the establishment. While there are “whistle blower” laws in many governments, in many cases the informer loses their position or is “pigeon-holed” in their position for a long time to come. There are other legal issues that involve ethical decision making. There is discrimination based on race, sex, religion etc. There is discrimination against the disabled and contrary to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). There is discrimination against employees who come from different cultures. The author provides some specific guidelines managers and leaders can employ to manage diversity: Set an example by ones own behavior or appreciation for diversity Encourage respect for individual differences Promote understanding of different values, beliefs, and traditions Explain the benefits of diversity for the team or organization Encourage and support others who promote tolerance of diversity Discourage use of stereotypes to describe people Identify biased beliefs and role expectations for women and minorities Challenge people who make prejudiced comments Speak out to protest against unfair treatment based on prejudice Take disciplinary action to stop harassment of women or minorities Note this list of what the average employee can do is similar in many respects as to what managers and leaders should be doing. In the end, these guidelines are pretty straight forward and common sense.
