Three missionaries and three cannibals seek to cross a river from the left bank to the right bank. A boat is available which will hold two people and which can be navigated by any combination of missionaries and cannibals involving not more than two and not less than one person. If the missionaries on either bank of the river are outnumbered at any time by cannibals, the cannibals will indulge their anthropophagic tendencies and eat the missionaries. When the boat is moored at a bank, its passengers are regarded as being on the bank.
