John Rolls p.342 o Metaethics o The Theory of the Good Your own personal set of ethical/ religious values o Political philosopher J.L. Mackie o Argument from Queerness Metaphysical values are odd because they’re supposed to be independent of our values while calling to us Epistemological argument If there are objective moral truths then we have to have a special moral sense Beauty, economics, biology If there’s a realm of existence that’s diff from other realms, is it really a puzzle how we come to know it? o We don’t have a special sense for detecting biological species There is a puzzle with regards to defining morality Biggest problem- Relativity Causal roles (?) Thermostat example (?) Something exists if it plays a causal role o Argument from Relativity p.503 The mere fact that there are disagreements doesn’t mean there aren’t objective truths There is moral disagreement, but people disagree in other areas- this doesn’t show that there isn’t objective truth
