look at: -stereotypes -film -cultural appropriation - think about films in terms of representation, think of the film experience. think about film distribution and production= this is key ethnic anomalies ethnicity: us vs them. relationship between agents and individuals. it’s constructed through interations. relationship between the state and community. relational. fluent. it can be changed. it’s also historically contingent. ethnicity can change based on the historical time period. also depends on the law. example: Mexican Americans before the 1930s they were considered white. post 1930s, they were considered an ethnic minority. how do the films represent ethnicity? dances w/ wolves what is color dave chapelle strictly business ethnogenisis- the formation or birth of an ethnicity. read Stuart Hall and White Indians. in order to understand the culture we need to be historically specific to develop questions. decentralizing differences… he’s talking about post-modernism.
