Zack Nash Immigration Final Draft 11/14/10 Arizona recently put a new immigration law into effect. New York Times says that this law “would make the failure to carry immigration documents a crime and give the police broad power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally”(Archibold). This means that if an illegal immigrant did not have their “papers” they could be arrested. This law is extremely controversial and some say it is good for America. However, this law is terrible because it discriminates against immigrants. Seeing that this law requires local law enforcement to arrest a person when there is “reasonable suspicion” that the person is in the country illegally, Arizona lawmakers have created a system that guarantees racial profiling. They also have taken over federal authority by attempting to enforce immigration law. This law is a civil rights disaster and an insult to American values. No one in our country should be required to produce their “papers” on demand to prove their innocence. “’It is
