Became an excellent botanist (plant biologist) Became interested in how inheritance worked Performed new experiments from 1857-1865 to deduce principles of inheritance in pea plants. Terminology: Allele – the specific type of a characteristic (each individual has 2 alleles for each gene) Genotype – the genetic makeup Phenotype – the outside appearance Homozygous dominant – two dominant alleles Homozygous recessive – two recessive alleles Heterozygous – one dominant and one recessive allele Generations: Parent : genotypes – PP , ww (always a dominant homozygote crossed with a recessive homozygote) phenotypes – purple , white F1 generation : genotypes – P w (always heterozygous) phenotypes – all purple P w P w P w P w w w P P Punnett squares Offspring of parents F2 generation...
