Can be species specific, individual specific, or developmentally specific. Two kinds Two questions Innate (instinctual) behaviors Examples Web-weaving in spiders Begging for food in chicks (pecking at high contrast bill in herring gulls) Chick crouching in many ground-nesting birds Imprinting on parent at hatching (Smiling and contagious yawning in humans) Imprinting Learned behaviors Chicks do not crouch Chicks crouch Social learning: Song acquisition in white-crowned sparrows Lyre bird Associative learning (operant conditioning) Small minds and spatial learning Cognition Behavioral genetics Behavior is a combination of genetics and environment.
