Protective membrane: guards against excessive loss of water, salts, heat and against the invasion of toxins or bacteria • 2. Contains sebaceous and sweat glands • 3. Helps maintain body temperature through vasodilation and production of sweat Structure of the Skin • Epidermis--thin cellular membrane layer • Dermis--dense, fibrous, connective tissue layer • Subcutaneous tissue—Thick fat containing tissue Epidermis • Squamous epithelium • Cells are flat and scale like • Arranged in layers called strata (Stratified squamous epithelium) • Dependent on dermis for nourishment • Basal layer cells are constantly growing and supplying cells to the upper layers Epidermis • Cells on their way to top layer—Stratum Corneum—flatten, shrink, lose their nuclei...
