NPB132 Description of hormones and coat color terminology. 1. Adiponectin is an adipokine with insulin-sensitizing and anti-inflammatory actions that is suppressed in obesity in parallel to reduced insulin sensitivity. 2. Agouti-related peptide (AgRP), is an antagonist of melanocortin receptors-3 and -4 (MC3R/4R) activity. 3. α -melanocyte-stimulating hormone ( α -MSH), activates all melanocortin receptors (MC1- 5). 4. Amylin. Amylin (islet amyloid polypeptide) is a 37– amino acid peptide cosecreted with insulin by pancreatic ß cells. In animal studies, synthetic amylin analogs delay gastric emptying and decrease food intake (58), an effect mediated by the area postrema in rats. 5. Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (Cart). A 116 amino-acid neuropeptide that inhibits normal and starvation- induced feeding in rodents when administered centrally. In addition, central administration of Cart is able to block the feeding response induced by neuropeptide Y (Npy) administered via the same route. Expression of Cart is almost absent in obese (ob/ob) mice and is decreased in normal mice by fasting. Peripheral administration of leptin increases expression of Cart. 6.
