BS 110 Notes 9/3/2010 Biological Principle – Theory that has been repeatedly verified and has a wide application in the field of biology Cell Principle – Cell is the basic unit of biological structure, function, and reproduction. 3 General components: Cell membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus Nucleus controls activites of the cell. Composed of DNA, RNA, Proteins, water and other materials and that leads to chromosomes. Structure and Function of DNA: DNA composed of Nucleotides 1. One Unit of Sugar 2. One Unit of Phosphate 3. One Nitrogen Base a. Guanine b. Cytosine c. Adenine d. Thymine i. Thymine replaced by Uracil in RNA e. Guanine and Adenine = Purines – 2 ringed chemical structure f. Cytosine, Thymine and Uracil = Pyrimidines – Single ring chemical structure
