BS 110 Notes 9-17-2010 General Theory of Evolution Life evolved from one or more simple kinds of organisms. Microorganisms evolved on earth more than 5.5 BYA Over time, new species, etc arose from another species o Taxonomic group heiracrchy: Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species Evolutionary changes were gradual and of long duration Species originated in one geographic locality Greater the similarity between two groups of organisms the closer the relationship and closer the ancestor Once a species becomes extinct it never reappears Continues today in generally the same manner as it has in the past Microevolution – evolutionary changes that take place at species level or below or changes in the frequency of alleles in the gene pool of a population through time Macroevolution – evolutionary changes that take place at the taxonomic groups above the species Evidence for Evolution
