BS 110 Notes 10-11-2010 Synthetic Theory of Evolution Continued: Phenotype that favors production of more offspring will contribute more genes to pool Isolation restricts gene flow between populations Gene frequency changes occur Speciation completed when variations have accumulated and genetic exchanges can’t occur. Factors are prezygotic and postzygotic. Mutation is a source of new genes in gene pool Why do ducks fly south for the winter? Religious – God gave ducks the ability to find a winter haven Anthropomorphic(giving nonhuman species human characteristics) – ducks are looking for a warmer environment Teleological (describes need or purpose) – ducks need to go south to survive Natural Selection/Evolutionary – in the past ducks that migrated south produced more surviving offspring than those that did not Taxonomy, Systematics, and Organismal Diversity Taxonomy – practice and theory of classifying organisms Systematics – methods and relationships used in taxonomy
