BS 110 Notes 11-12-2010 Biogeochemical Cycles All organisms require at least 30 chemical elements Cycle between biotic and abiotic components Two Types: o Carbon Cycle Source of most carbon is found in organisms is CO2 CO2 utilized by pants via photosynthesis >> animals Returned to atmosphere by respiration of organisms; breakdown of wastes and protoplasm by decay of organisms Some carbon is incorporated into earth’s crust Geological, industrial and agricultural activities liberate carbon Nitrogen Cycle Inert N2 makes up about 78% of atmostphere Source of N for plants are N2 fixing bacteria. Convert N2 into ammonia (NH3), NH3 into Nitrite (NO2) and NO2 into Nitrates (NO3). Plants >> Animals; N is excreted and released in the environment Nitrogenous compounds are released when dead tissue is broken down Oxygen Cycle O2 is a by-product of photosynthesis
