S29. Find the work performed in each of the following processes: a. Two moles of ideal gas at 25°C and initially at a pressure of 1.0 atm are expanded by suddenly lowering the external pressure to 0.50 atm and letting the gas expand against this reduced pressure until equilibrium is established (assume the final temperature is also 25°C) Note that for this irreversible path, I can rewrite it as the sum of two reversible paths, which we can refer to as a1 and a2. The first reversible path, a1, is an isochoric (constant volume) pressure drop and the second, a2, is an isobaric expansion, as shown below. The work is show by the area under the horizontal line. We can calculate the work for each step and add them together to obtain the work for the irreversible process.
