Jordan Townsend Global 120: Juergensmeyer Section: Wed @7pm - Villanueva Reading Notes #5 1. “The US and the Soviet Proxy War in Afghanistan” The main focus of this reading is on the Proxy War in Afghanistan in which the US funded the Mujahadeen in their fight to expel the Soviets, in addition to the policies in which the US instilled before fully withdrawing aid in 1992. The reading relates to class discussions of the battle of ideologies within the Cuban revolution, which are quite similar to what is being fought for in Afghanistan, both proxy wars claiming support from the US and Soviets to their respective sides in the battle of ideologies. 2. “The World is Ten Years Old” - Friedman The main focus of this reading is globalization of the world following the fall of the Berlin Wall, signifying a new era in which an increase in telecommunication technologies that have enabled our world to “shrink” significantly. This reading relates to class by discussing both the positive and negative effects of a new era of globalization in which the world is increasingly being drawn closer together. 3.
