ELC Office : Wells Hall A-Wing, 7th Floor (phone USA 517 353 0800) IMPORTANT DATES ESL 220 and MSU semester start, September 1 Due dates, portfolio multi-draft essay drafts, every Tuesday from October 5 ( see Note 1 ) First timed-writing exam ( externally graded), scheduled for a date to be announced ( see Note 2 ) First internal writing and grammar exam ( internally graded), Thursday, October 21 Second timed-writing exam ( externally graded), scheduled for a date to be announced ( see Note 2 ) Second internal writing and grammar exam ( internally graded), Thursday, December 9 ( see Note 3 ) ESL 220 and MSU general classes end, December 10 Note 1: An important note on time due on those days is in the relevant details-section on p3, this syllabus. Note 2: A substitute first page of this syllabus, with exact dates, will be issued when those are decided. Note 3: This date may be changed to Friday, December 10; if it is, faculty will advise students well ahead.

Student focus is on writing coherent, thesis-driven, multi-paragraph papers, essays and other assignments in university-level American English. Departmental and faculty focus is on each class-member improving his or her skills in such writing. This process includes (but is not limited to): planning essay
