(776) Embryology - Developmental Abnormalities Spinal bifida (splitting tube) found in lumbar area - vertebral lamina fails to unite causing spinal cord to bulge our (meningoele cell) Neural tube defect (NTD) - instead of hollow tube, portion of spinal cord develops as a broad plate alpha fetal protein (blood test) - if lower than normal, down syndrome baby (363) Spinal Cord (foramen magnum - conus medullaris ) We have the same 3 meninges down to spinal cord filum terminale - ligament of dura that anchors SC to sacrum conus medullaris (L1) cauda equina (below L1) - spinal nerves exiting from SC forming a horse tail Spinal Nerves cervical spinal nerves (C1-C8)-because 1st one starts between magnum and C1 thoracic (T1-T12) lumbar (L1-L5) sacral (S1-S5) cocygeal (Co1) Cross section of SC (dorsal-sensory; ventral-motor) grey matter (inside); white matter (surface) -- reverse of brain dorsal root ganglion
