Professional growth 38-2. Describe the qualities of an effective counselor. Army leaders must demonstrate certain qualities to be effective counselors. These qualities include respect for subordinates, self-awareness and cultural awareness, empathy, and credibility. 38-3. Describe active listening and why it is important. Eye contact . Maintaining eye contact without staring helps show sincere interest.
