Harjit Kaur Che 201 Ex 4 I A. In this experiment we are carrying out organic synthesis, which is the preparation of salicylic acid from methyl salicylate. An organic synthesis can be described as the preparation a desired organic compound by chemically modifying the molecules of another organic molecules. Before salicylic acid was synthesis from natural wintergreen oil. We made salicylic acid starting from methyl salicylate, which is a major part of the wintergreen oil. B. II A. 2mmol of methyl salicylate is added to a vial and then 2.5 ml of NaOH is added to it and a Ppt is created. It is then heated for 30 min till all the Ppt has dissolved and then cooled. After it has cooled we then added H2SO4 and another Ppt is created. We then filtered it and washed. We had to wait for the product to dry and then we had to recrystallize it by adding it to water and boiling it. It is then cooled, filtered, and weighed. After that we had to find the melting product of both products, one which is a pure product which we created and then the other is
