Harjit Kaur CHE 202 EX 46: Synthesis of N,N-Diethyl-Meta-Toluamide I. A. The purpose of this lab was to synthesize N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) using the m-methylbenzyoic acid and diethylamine. DEET is the most active ingredient in insect repellents. It is used to protect the skin from insect bites. B. II A. The glassware was dried, and a reflux was set up using a 10 mL flask. 3mmol of m-toluic acid is added in to it and a stir bar is dropped in. .26 mL of thionyl chloride is added and the reaction is heated for 20 min. While the reaction was being heated, 3 mL of NaOH is added into a 5 mL vial and cooled in a ice bath. Under the hood 2.5 mmol of diethylamine hydrochloride is added into the NaOH the solution is then capped and added to the solution that was being heated slowly. It is then added to a hot water bath for 15 min. The reaction is then let to cool to room temp and 3 2 ml diethyl ether washes were done.
