SPANISH GENERAL STRIKE OF SEPTEMBER 29 th 2010 The main reason for the general strike that took place on September 29 th 2010 was the labor policy approved by the Congress the 9 th of September 2010, and also the pension reform announced by the Government which would be approved before the end of the year. It was organized by the trade unions “UGT” and “CCOO”. The measures proposed by the government for the labor policy regarding the dismissals are: Objective dismissals: This happens when the firm has a “negative economic situation” which has to be determined by the court. The firm would be in this situation when having a persistent income fall or losses. In this case, employees will have 20 days of compensation per year. Absenteeism dismissals: When absenteeism overcomes 20% of the working day in two months or when the average staff absenteeism is higher than 2.5%, employees will be compensated with 20 days per year.
