Biol 121 Anatomy and Physiology I Chapter 1 - The Human Body: an Orientation I. Introduction A. Definitions : 1. Anatomy - study of body structure a) Gross - large body structures, examine without instruments b) Microscopic - Structures too small to be seen without microscope (Cytology - cell, Histology - tissue) c) Developmental - changes from conception through old age. 2. Physiology - study of body function a) Divided by organ system: neuro, renal, cardiovascular, etc. B. Complementarity of Structure and Function 1. Impossible to study anatomy and physiology in isolation as function always reflects structure. 2. What a structure can do depends on its specific form. Ex: Bones support and protect because they contain hard mineral deposits. C. Body Organization 1. Chemical - simplest level, atoms 2. Cellular - vary in size, shape and function 3.
