Although lean production has been most often implemented in manufacturing companies, it may also be used successfully by merchandising firms and service providers. How might lean techniques be implemented by a retail store in a mall and by a local restaurant or other service provider? What benefits might be realized? Lean production focuses on eliminating waste and managing inventory. It could be implemented by a retail store or a restaurant. Implementing lean techniques could help improving quality, eliminating waste, reducing time and minimizing total costs. First, improving quality could involve different steps. The retail store and the restaurant should identify the customers’ wants and needs.
