Unformatted text preview: HISTORY 17B MIDTERM REVIEW CLASS 2 - 1/6/11 After the Civil War Reconstruction (1865-1877) Period after the civil war until 1877 when the northern troops all evacuated the south. Achieved reincorporation of the former Confederate states into the Union. Transitioned from slavery to freedom in the south. 13 th , 14 th , and 15 th amendments put into place. 13 th amendment (1865) Amendment that freed the slaves who hadnt been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. ~1 mil slaves. 14 th amendment (1868) Amendment that granted all civil liberties to all American citizens regardless of race. Granted citizenship to all native-born or naturalized persons. Congress passed the civil rights bill in 1866, which was vetoed by Johnson but overruled by congress. Granted full citizenship and protection for African Americans. 15 th amendment (1870) Granted suffrage to all African American males. Andrew Johnson Became president when Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. He was from Tennessee and a Democrat. Johnson was the only member of congress to not secede with the rest of the members of congress from Confederacy states. He wanted to be lenient and grant amnesty to the south, who he believed were more like an errant brother than traitors. At odds with the radical republicans who didnt want things to just go back to the way that they were. Approved the black codes. First president to be impeached. Black Codes (1865) Rigid labor laws that targeted freed men and women. Blacks cant enter nor live in cities if they arent working. Gives blacks a curfew limiting mobility. No blacks can congregate or preach. Blacks cant carry firearms. No black merchants. Blacks can t drink alcohol. The black codes were enacted by some southern governments and led to congress passing the civil rights bill of 1866 and the 14 th amendment in 1868 eventually. Radical Reconstruction Reconstruction Act of 1867 put troops in the south. Requires each state to ratify the 14 th amendment and make new state constitutions that include the 14 th amendment. Freed men can vote. This led to many blacks being elected to political office. This all led to the 13 th , 14 th , and 15 th amendments. Ku Klux Klan (end of 1865 or beginning of 1866 ) Secret organization founded by former confederate officers in Tennessee. Their purpose was to destroy the Republican party and terrorize its voters. The KKK led to laws for interfering with voter rights, depriving people of civil or political rights, and gave the president the right to send troops to suppress armed resistance to federal law. The 15 th amendment is passed in response to the KKK, which wont allow any state to deny the right to vote based on race or color....
