Judaic 271 January 10, 2011 Poland in Jewish Imagination Jews come from Russian Empire because of religious persecutions and economic reasons Jews go to east expelled from the rest o Poland, not able to sustain No king power 10% belonged to privileged people perfect place for Jews Big gap between rich and poor perfect place for Jews Jews built their town in Poland where there was no town Jews from Germany on way to Israel Stayed in Poland for a few years o Jews dispersed among peasants, brought them prosperity o Jews offered land and their own community (shtetl, small town) Shtetl o Eastern Europe Context small Jewish town Important that Jews live in center surrounding marketplace 3 elements for community to exist o Organize a synagogue o Mikva- women put in water so they can have sex Built w bathhouse, water purification o Cemetery specifically dedicated to Jews 18 th Century Half of all Jews in the world live in these towns
