Stanley Hall o Established first research lab in psychology at Johns Hopkins U o Launched America’s first psychological journal o Driving force to the American Psychological Association (APA) o First president of APA Structuralism Based on the notion that the task of psychology is to analyze consciousness into its basic elements Investigate how these elements are related Introspection Careful, systematic self-observation of one’s own conscious experience Requires training to make the subject more objective and aware Functionalism Based on the belief that psychology should investigate the function or purpose of consciousness, rather than structure Natural Selection Heritable characteristics
