    Theory:  A systematic way of organizing and understanding observations  From theories    Hypothesis :  A proposed relationship between two variables  Lends support to theories  Test the hypothesis that will support what the theory is  Mind body connection (theory)   stress causes illness (hypothesis) Variable:  anything which can be measured or described along a particular  dimension Continuous Variable:  a variable which can be measured across a  continuum o Tracking weight loss, tracking lbs lost o What’s the effect of drinking diet coke on sleep, tracking time of  sleep Categorical Variable:  a variable with a fixed meaning or attribute o Marital status o Diabetic? Yes or no?  Operational definitions:  Label and describe the variables of interest  Research on sexual activity and adolescence: how do you define  “sexually active”   what does sexually active mean?! Oral?  Research on Marijuana use and academic achievement: how does on  define/differentiate “use”   differentiate between light, moderate, and  heavy user, defined heavy as smoking 29/30 days  Research on Aggression and Preschoolers: what is aggression?  Physically pushing? Verbal? Any hostile act that involved physical  contact between children.  Research Methods in Five Easy Steps     Develop a theory based on observations
