Santa Monica College 5/7/2009 Dance 2 Anna Birkstedt A cultural explosion: The world comes together at Santa Monica College On Saturday May 2, steps, body movements, traditions and religious rituals, from all over the world came together in one big cultural explosion at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica. Folklorico de SMC was a colourful and inspiring show that contained dances from every corner of the world. The performance was a mix of dances from all over the world, and contained modern dance, ballet, tap dance, traditional and ritual dances, to name a few. The dancers put on a great show, with something for everyone to enjoy. With as many as 15 different pieces, every piece had its own story to tell. Most of the pieces were very enjoyable to watch, but three pieces in particular truly amazed me. The third piece, Raqs Assaya - the Egyptian belly dance, was remarkable and fantastic. Choreographed by Jennifer Jesswein, the piece was wonderfully put together, with the beautiful Arabic music, the colorful costumes by Patricia Oliva, the twirling canes and the way the dancers used the entire space on stage.
