Criteria used to designate a substance as a neurotransmitter 1. The substance must be synthesized and released by neurons. 2. Release should be from nerve terminals. 3. Putative neurotransmitter should reproduce postsynaptic cell-specific responses analogous to those observed upon stimulation of the presynaptic neuron. 4. The effects of the putative neurotransmitter should be blocked by a known competitive antagonists in a dose-dependent manner. 5. There should be active mechanisms to terminate the actions of the putative neurotransmitter.
