215 Social Psyc – Chapter 1 SCIENTIFIC STUDY Social psyc applies the scientific method of systematic observation, description, and measurement to the study of the human condition HOW INDIVIDUALS THINK, FEEL, AND BEHAVE Social psychology: the scientific study of how individual’s think, feel, and behave in regard to other people and how individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are affected by other people Social psychologists investigate a wide variety of attitudes and contexts – strive to establish general principals of attitude formation and change that apply to a variety of situations The study of individuals – not groups – OTHER PEOPLE – THE SOCIAL ELEMENT The last part of the definition: how individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are affected by other people – where the social part comes from – how we think, act etc when we think about how other’s will see us, we care about what other people think THE POWER OF SOCIAL CONTEXT: AN EXAMPLE OF A SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY EXPERIMENT The social nature of people runs so deep, and feels so personal and unique to ourselves but in actuality, we can be influenced subtly but significantly by the people in our lives Emily Pronin – did a study on identity bifurcation o Women who were doing their undergrad in math did the study o They looked at the issue of the fact that math was a part of their identity, but they realized there were negative stereotypes associated with their math ability and their identity as women o They found that particular traits (emotion) were considered by many undergrads as both feminine and associated with a lack of success in math o A trait such as empathetic for example was seen as consistent with femininity but not related to math o They tested this by doing an exp where there were 2 groups eading scientific articles – 1 talking about math and gender, and seeing result stating that the boys did better than the girls, and another article that had nothing to do with math and gender
