Symmetry Pro-choice Right to life – does  not entitle fetus to  use of women’s  body. Right to choose  doesn’t amount to  much if a women  can’t choose to have  an abortion. Pro-life Right to choose –  does not entitle  women to end  someone’s life. Right to life doesn’t  amount to much if it  allows the willful  interference of one’s  life.

Symmetry Pro-choice Scope problem –  criteria is too narrow. Doesn’t include  infants, severely  mentally disabled,  etc. Relevance problem –  have to establish the  relevance of  psychological traits. Pro-life Scope problem –  criteria is too wide. Biological humanity  includes things that  don’t have a r.t.l. e.g.  cancer cells. Relevance problem –  have to establish that  biology is morally  relevant.

FLO account of the  wrongness of killing Killing is wrong because it deprives us of our future  lives. Tragedy when someone dies young because they had a  future. It is our conscious future life that we care about. Would be just as tragic if a young person was in a coma. Loss of our future conscious life is a loss of the goods  that come with it.  e.g. our hopes, plans, goals, experiences, intellectual  pursuits, friendships. This applies as much to fetuses as it does to adult  humans.

FLO More specifically, killing is wrong because it  deprives a being of a “ future like ours. A “future like ours” is a future of value. We value our future and depriving a being of a  future like ours is wrong because we would be  depriving them of something that is of value. The future life itself is valuable whether or not the
