Tarter Telephone: 510-6424601 Email: tarter@.Berkeley.edu Office: 779 University Hall (Uhall) Class Mailbox in the Environmental Health Suite (760 Uhall), near the Xerox machine, listed as Tarter Goals and Objectives (Only the first 12 sessions are surveyed.) Although the topics discussed are elementary, this is in no way an elementary statistics course. Instead, it was designed for researchers and students who are unfamiliar with the recent statistics literature but who have at least a one-semester background in calculus. This background is needed to consider advances made by pioneer researchers with an eye to reconsidering their inquiries from a modern viewpoint. An early version of this course was first tried out at a Summer Session in Biostatistics offered in Seattle Washington in 1970 and later at two American Statistical Association short courses as well as a recent summer session in statistics sponsored by the Istituto di Metodi Quantitativi, Universita Commerciale , L. Bocconi, Milano. These four courses and twenty-eight years of teaching were based on a “full circle” approach, where exercises began with student-or-researcher-specified parameter values and ended with estimated curves together with these curves’ estimated parameter values. Calling upon data simulated in this way gets around a didactic problem.
