Research Paper Proposal Date: 3/03/2009 To: Professor Jennifer Beattie From: Maryah Barna (mbarna@tctc.edu) Subject of My Paper: Culture in Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s Petals of Blood My Thesis: Ngugi wa Thiong’o shows the impact of greed upon a society in Kenya through his novel Petals of Blood . Approach to the Subject of My Paper: My paper will focus on how Petals of Blood shows how greed can ruin a society through the culture’s politics, economy, and relationships between a man and a woman. The first section of my paper will analyze the effects of greed within a society’s political standings. The two main cities within Petals of Blood are exact opposites at the beginning of the novel, but become the same in the end. This is due to the greed of the wealthy that force themselves upon the villagers of Illmorog. The politicians who are suppose to help the poor, in fact, make it worse by adding to their own power.
