Barna Maryah Barna English 213 Lynn Childress December 1 st , 2009 The Importance of Being Earnest Play versus Film The play The Importance of Being Earnest was written by the famous Oscar Wilde, and premiered in 1895 in London, England. This play was a great hit for Wilde, but became even more well known when Oliver Parker turned it into a film in 2002. The play had 83 performances within its time, while the movie made an income of over eight million dollars. Even though the play was a hit for its time, Oscar Wilde did not have the resources to create such a masterpiece. Also, Oliver Parker added a few little tid-bits of his own that set the film apart from the movie. The little additions that Parker made to the original work of The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde gives the movie a longer lasting effect than the play. Films have the upper hand when it comes down to plays and films. They have the ability to change the mood and temper of a film better than a play can. Films can also go deeper into the history of a character and the emotional attachments or upsets that a character goes through.
