Unformatted text preview: Andrew Abeysinghe PHIL 102 SEC 006 Prof. Mason 30 November 2009 Same-Sex Marriages The Declaration of Independence states, ” We hold these t ruths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” In the United States today, people don’t often stop to think of these words, written down over 200 years ago by our founding fathers. As a people, we take these rights for granted, and live under the assumption that all men are equal, and are given the same rights by the government. Many people either ignore, or do not realize, what is going on in our country today. Certain groups, such as same sex couples, are being persecuted because of their beliefs, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. Same sex couples are being denied the rights, to civil unions and/or marriages, the very same rights laid down by the Declaration of Independence, mainly their liberty, and pursuit of happiness. There are many more reasons supporting same sex marriage than there are opposing it, and it is wrong to deny same sex couples these rights.
