Advantages, Disadvantages and When to use basic organization design options Combined notes from flipcharts in both sections (slightly edited) October 19, 2009 Functional Designs Advantages: - Promotes specialized and deep knowledge in functions - Likely to have the best implementation of Sarbanes Oxley (for instance) - Most efficient (least duplication) Disadvantages: - Slow to adapt to new situations - Heavy lifting for the top managers - Not a good design for growing people with a broad perspective - Restricts learning - Lack of exposure - Risks overuse of specialized knowledge power (Ideas can’t be questioned because other areas don’t have expertise) When to use? - Smaller organizations or smaller units of a large organization - When specialized knowledge really matters (such as in R&D cases) - Companies that have a single product or low cost mass produced product What do you need to have to make functional organizations work? -
