Kyle BryantHistory112Professor Steven ConnEssay 1Immigration Act and Literacy TestThe Immigration Act of 1891 was the law that opened the gates to the Bureau of Immigration and many other discriminatory acts. In 1882 the Immigration Act was revised. The revised law banned criminals and disabled persons from entering the country. It was also the firstlegal law that stated illegal immigrants would not only have to go back to their home country butpay for their passage back. Twenty-five years later, the United States government revised the immigration act once again. The 1917 immigration act stated in order for anyone to become U.S. citizens they would have to pass a literacy test, young or old. This law also banned anyone who was deemed as undesirable and was an extension of the 1892 immigration act. This banned a great amount of people from all kinds of walks of life. Groups that were targeted were polygamists, paupers, “idiots”, and people suffering from dangerous contagious diseases. It also
