Draw the electron energy diagrams for Au and Si, given that the work function of Au is greater than the work function of Si ( Φ Au > Φ Si ). b. Suppose they are put into electrical contact in air. Draw the new electron energy diagrams which arise due to this contact. Using dashed lines, include the original work functions. c. Which element gives up electrons? Silicon d. Is there a continuous flow? No. (There is an initial continuous burst, until the electrochemical potentials equilibrate, then electron flow stops.) e. For the element that gives up electrons, do the energies of the remaining electrons increase or decrease? Decrease. 2.
