Chapter 9 NERVES NOTES ANSWERS Nerves 1. Differentiate between the central and peripheral nervous systems. The human nervous system is divided into two parts: 1) CNS (central nervous system) – brain and spinal cord 2) PNS (peripheral nervous system) – voluntary and autonomic nerves (everything else) 2. Draw and label the structure of a neuron. (Include dendrites, cell body, nucleus, axon, myelin sheath,  nodes of Ranvier, and motor end plates.) 3. Differentiate between resting potential and action potential. Resting potential  is the electrical potential across a membrane when there is no nerve impulse occurring Action potential  is the electrical potential across a membrane as it passes a nerve impulse 4. What role do Na +  and K +  play in nerve impulses? How is active transport involved? The concentration of Na is higher outside
