1.Contrast the phrases "mean of differences" and "difference of means". Which phrase is appropriate for which t-test?  2. A sample of n = 16 scores has a mean of M = 83 and a standard deviation of s = 12.  A. Explain what is measured by the sample standard deviation.  b. Compute the estimated standard error for the sample mean and explain what is measured by the standard error. (1) “Mean of differences” refers to the average of the differences between each pair of scores in a repeated measures study. It is appropriate for a repeated measures study (paired data), that is paired t- test. “Difference of means” refers to the difference between the averages of two independent groups. It is appropriate for independent measures study, that is t- test for independent samples. (2) (a) Sample standard deviation is the SD of the sample of 16 scores that has been drawn from the population. In this case, it is 12.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
