1.Contrast the phrases "mean of differences" and "difference of means". Which phrase is appropriate for which t-test?  2. A sample of n = 16 scores has a mean of M = 83 and a standard deviation of s = 12.  A. Explain what is measured by the sample standard deviation.  b. Compute the estimated standard error for the sample mean and explain what is measured by the standard error. (1) “Mean of differences” refers to the average of the differences between each pair of scores in a repeated measures study. It is appropriate for a repeated measures study (paired data), that is paired t- test. “Difference of means” refers to the difference between the averages of two independent groups. It is appropriate for independent measures study, that is t- test for independent samples. (2) (a) Sample standard deviation is the SD of the sample of 16 scores that has been drawn from the population. In this case, it is 12. (b) SE = s/√n = 12/√16 = 3
