Consider (1) (1) Homer seems to have eaten the donut (2) The donut appears to be sweet What is the structure of sentences in (1) and (2) ? Is the matrix verb thematic? i.e. does it assign a theta-role to its specifier? How can we test whether a given verb is thematic or not? (3) The cat seems to be out the bag (4) It appears to be raining (5) There appear to be many people in the room Æ Draw a tree for (1) (6) TREE 2. ECM Æ Now, consider sentences in (7) and (8) (7) Vinca believes Cookie to be sick (8) Cookie considers Vinca to be the alfa cat Æ What are some differences between (7), (8) and (1) and (2)? Æ What case do ‘Cookie’ and ‘Vinca’ get? How can you test it? Æ Where does the case come from? Æ Is the matrix verb in (7) thematic or not? How can you test this?
